I've heard that the difference between a "rut" and a grave is the ends. I kept digging my own rut year after year, and if you've ever held a fifth by the neck you see it requires the same grip that one would use on a shovel. Alcohol was my "tool". I've found that to change tools I have to let loose of one before reaching for another.
By unclenching my fist, opening my hands, and reaching for help through AA, I am able to pick up several tools offered through working this program.
