March 16, 2010 - Today's Gift from Hazelden

Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Today's thought from Hazelden is:

Say when it's time to do that difficult thing.

Sometimes, true windows of opportunity open in our lives. We get a chance to make that amend. The perfect time to end or resolve that relationship arises. It's like a gift from God when that window opens up. All we need to do is gently step through. But sometimes, we need to help God open the window - especially when we're working up the courage to do a difficult thing.

Maybe we're waiting… Continue

No Reservation
We have see the truth demonstrated again and again:
"Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic."
Commencing to drink after a period of sobriety,
we are in a short time as bad as ever.
If we are planning to stop drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind,
nor any lurking notion that someday we will be immune to alcohol.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 33

Thought to Ponder ...
If we want to quit drinking, we ar… Continue

Thought for the Day
Before we decide to quit drinking, most of us have to come up against a blank wall. We see that we're licked, that we have to quit. But we don't know which way to turn for help. There seems to be no door in that blank wall. AA opens the door that leads to sobriety. By encouraging us to honestly admit that we're alcoholics and to realize that we can't take even one drink, and by showing us which way to turn for help, AA opens th… Continue

Reflection for the Day
The Program teaches us that we are bodily and mentally different than our fellows. We are reminded that the great obsession of every abnormal drinker - and every one of us who is otherwise addictive - is to prove that somehow, some day, we will be able to control our drinking, eating or gambling. The persistence of this illusion is astonishing, we are told, and many pursue it to the gates of insanity or death.

Have I conceded to my… Continue

The Eye Opener
Tuesday, March 16, 2010

The dollar is worth but about half its value of only a few years ago. Capital gains taxes have depreciated all properties by 25 percent. Moneys invested in stocks and bonds can be swept away between dawn and dark. The sound investment of today can be a white elephant on your hands tomorrow.

Your dollars invested in the rehabilitation of human souls are the only investment that can't lose. The dividents are paid whether the project fails or not. This way y… Continue

Chris, how are you doing? It has been so busy the past couple of weeks, taking care of my grandson and continuing to advocate for special needs children. Heartfelt thank you for your continuing prayers on behalf of my grandson, my daughter and myself. Sending much-missed friendship, hugs & love to you. Have a wonderful day and upcoming week.

Thank you Chris. That was extremely clear and I appreciate your honesty and insight. The statement you made about using alcohol to deal with things you did not want to, I know, is the root of MY experience (and I'm sure most of us). The more I mingle on this site with different ones through direct comments or reading their story blogs, the more I see I am not unique :) It feels go to know I am not alone and that I finally do fit in somewhere with others who struggle with the same daily thoughts, repeated actions and who are teaching me a better way to live. Thank you so much for your response. It's just what I need to hear.

I'm interested in your comment about how a single drink will send you into a full relapse. I'm 15 days sober and trying to learn from others experiences. Please don't be one who recites a bunch of stuff from the BB (as so many here do - which is okay, but...) I am needing to hear everyday experiences of others who have lived through a slip, a relapse, a setback...whatever....and regained control of their lives. How did you feel afterward? What helped you to make the decision to come back? What were the circumstances that lead up to it? etc, etc, etc....Thanks for honoring my request for your true life experience.

Today's Just for Today is, as usual, awesome. If I'm lonely, that sure is a HUGE red flag that I'm not living the Steps today. Any person who's truly living out the 12th Step doesn't have time to be bored, as there are so many opportunities out there to help others, both inside the rooms, and out.

Thanks for all you do every day, Chris! I'm so grateful you're my friend!
