Recovery Online!

Hi, I'm having a terrible time physically. I've talked to my sponsor and she says after the number of years that I binge drank there is no telling what kind of damage there may be and that I should give it time and of course go see a doctor. I just don't know what kind of a doctor to see since most are not versed in the treatment of alcoholism and what to really chase down, at least not in the area I live in.  I have 37 days sober today, and generally I've been ok, but about 1x a week or so, i just have a really terrible time of it with heart palpitations, tingling sensations, little panick and anxiousness, is this normal?

Theres nothing about us alcohlics thats normal Hun. We are like a can of mixed nuts. If you have any major medical concerns please see a doctor. But Emotions can be a powerful thing. Just relex and try not to think so much .. Just start doing and things may start going better for you.. But Never let your health concerns be put to the wayside..Try Breathing a lil deeper when you get these feelings or attacs. Plus it depends on ur age.. Woman over 45 should get annual physicals. You know all the female things and so on .. Heart, Blood work, EKG's .. Well we all should But hey we are alkies we tend to put off things that are good for us..Keep Punching and Hope it Helps..Aman.....

Could be physical, could be psychological. Our bodies tend to play out our emotions that we try to bury. But, to be sure go to your local Rite Aid or Walmart...anywhere you can used one of those Blood Pressure cuffs for free and check that first. Are you using a lot of salt? Hypertension could cause these reactions. And, above all...make an appointment to get a complete physical with a gyno-doctor. She can run a blood panel to check thyroid, liver function, etc....as well as the usual stuff she does. It's worth the $$$$ to know what's going on with you.

First - we are not doctors. In AA you can often find good answers to these kinds of questions but just as often find bad answers. For example, it sounds to me like panic, anxiety. That would not be surprising, because we depress our emotions with alcohol and drugs; when we stop, they come out sideways. But I don't know. When I first quit, I went to a general practitioner for a standard physical, including all the blood tests. I was lucky. I think if you do that, anything more serious than anxiety will show up, esp. if you alert your doctor to what's been going on. He doesn't have to be an expert in alcoholics, but tell him about your drinking history anyway.
btw - Congratulations, Kim - you are on your way to a new, good life. Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

Perhaps you may see and intrenal medicine doctor. I know the liver and pancreas hurt and you just feel like shit somedays. Be kind to yourself take vitamins and drink tons of water that what has been helpful to me.
Sober now almost 8 months they say it takes up to two years to get back to normal.
Take care sweetie.

Hi Kim---I had 35 days sober until about a week ago---Now I have 6----I had ups and downs physically---one day full of energy, feeling great---next day exhausted and feeling aches and pains------We have to remember alcoholism is a physical addiction as well as an emotional addiction----Your body is feeling things that it didn't often "feel" b/c you were drinking----so I think you should feel better over time---------That's what they told me in rehab anyway---Best Wishes to you!!
