Recovery Online!

Just For Today Book-DEC 18th,,N.A
"The fact that we, each and every group, focus on carrying the message provides consistency; addicts can count on us."

Tales of our antics in active addiction may be funny. Stories of our old bizarre reactions to life when using may be interesting. But they tend to carry the mess more than the message. Philosophical arguments on the nature of God are fascinating. Discussions of current controversies have their place-however, it's not at an NA meeting.
Those times when we grow disgusted with meetings and find ourselves complaining that "they don't know how to share" or "it was another whining session" are probably an indication that we need to take a good, hard look at how we share.
What we share about is how we got into recovery and how we stayed here through practicing the Twelve Steps is the real message of recovery. That's what we are all looking for when we go to a meeting. Our primary purpose is to carry the message to the still-suffering addict, and what we share at meetings can either contribute significantly to this effort or detract greatly. The choice, and the responsibility, is ours.
Just for today i will share my recovery at an NA meeting.

Alvin, I am with you on this one. While I do not attend NA, the same problems occur in AA. One of my favourite passages comes from "As Bill Sees It", AAWS, page 79.

"AA as such, cannot take on all the personal problems of its members, let alone those on non-alcoholics in the world around us. The A.A. group is not, for example, a mediator of domestic relations, nor does it furnish personal financial aid to anybody.

Though a member may sometimes be helped in such matters by his friends in AA , the primary responsibiolity for the solutions to all his problems of living and growing rests squarely upon the individual himself. Should an AA group attempt thgis sort of help, its effectiveness and energies would be hopelessly dissipated.

This is why sobriety - freedom from alcohol - through the teaching and practice of A.A.'s 12 Steps is the sole purpose of the group. If we don't stick to this cardinal principle, we shall almost certqinly collapse. And if we collapse, we cannot help anybody."

Letter, 1966

There are a lot piss and moan meetings in our area, but I do not attend them any more. I stick with literature meetings and the odd speaker meeting. If I go to step meetings, I carry a Big Book with me, even though they are using the 12 x 12.
