These quotes come from an Oct.,1981 Grapevine article titled-THE TIME TESTED PROGRAM OF RECOVERY. It concerns people with many years of sobriety-10,20,30,&plus. One man in the article, just as you,had 16yrs.
-...the answers for a drunk at any stage of sobriety are to be found in the Big Book.
-When you've been sober for years, its hard to believe that you're answers still lie in the Big Book.
-One of the problems of getting fouled up with a substantial amount of sobriety is that a person finds it almost impossible to understand that his answers still lie in working the 12 stps. I didn't drink during this time, but ultimately would have without the freedom that came from using the stps. This is the point where pills become attractive;we're willing to do almost anything to get rid of the psychic pain within us.
Both the Big Book and the 12&12 point out with powerful clarity that the A.A. program is not for just staying sober.Sobriety is the beginning, not the end. The A.A.program Is a transforming PRESCRIPTION for life of growing health, usefullness,& joy. By working,&REWORKING all of the 12stps on a continuing, lifetime commitment we experience ALL of the PROMISES found in the Big Book, and the guarantee quoted in the 12&12...if practiced as a way of life,can...enable the sufferer to become happily & usefully whole.
-Those guarantees, telling what you & I may expect as a result of working the stps, speak of wholeness. They dont describe alcoholics who traded drunkenness for sober terror or dry despair.
-If we havent experienced the programs promises,it is because we havent fullfilled the programs conditions.

I am not a doctor & i am not suggesting you stop taking your pain meds. What i am suggesting is the answer you seek will be found in the Big Book.Pg,69,btm.-In meditation we ask god about each specific matter. The answer will come if we want it. Also,by continuosly working all 12 stps on a lifetime commitment we no longer have to struggle.

Hey Julie; I to suffer from kronic pain, I broke my back in 1978. For a long time I would not take anything for pain I had this thing about "Pain Pills". For many years I used alcohol for a pain killer, I'm not using this as an excuse for the reason I drank, but, there were alot of times I drank to releave the pain. I am 54 years old now and have been sober for a little over a year. Not long after I decided I needed to change my life, I went to the Dr. I explained my past problems with alcohol and what I was trying to do about it. I see a Dr. through the V.A. They have a very strict policy when it comes to giving out pain meds. I am ramdomly drug tested for any other drugs. if anything is found or the drug I am taking is not found in the right amount they will stop the meds. This is a very touchy area, I only take my meds. when I am in alot of pain, and unless someone has had such pain I don't think they should judge those of us that do. Do what you and God think is right. God bless you!

I have the same problem with chronic pain, it is real, it is legitimate, and sometimes medication is the only short term solution. I have been sober for 4 years and have battled pain from a braken back for several years during that time. I have been honest with my Dr.'s as well as my sponsor and family. I try to use pain meds only as a last resort because I understand myself, I am an alcoholic as well as a drug addict and my disease is never gone, it is always lurking, waiting for a crack in my armour. Using pain medications does open the door a crack and thats why I need all the support I can get from AA members, sponsor, family, friends, and my Dr.
I for one believe that it is OK to use pain medicines when absolutely needed, just be very cognizant of the dangers. I also believe that living in constant pain and all the loss of quality of life that goes with the pain is even more dangerous to us. please remember this is just the opinion of one alcoholic/addict and I have learned from recovery that I am often wrong :-)
